The business
Start with the people the business could not lose easily, and the money it owes.
- Who are the genuinely key people, and what would their absence cost?
- Is any borrowing supported by a personal guarantee?
- Is there a cross-option agreement, and does it match the articles?
- Has the company been valued recently on an agreed basis?
The owner
Owner-managers often insure the company well and themselves poorly.
- Personal life cover and income protection appropriate to current commitments
- A will that accounts for the business as well as the house
- Lasting Powers of Attorney in place, not merely intended
- Cover reviewed after any material change in the business
Regional considerations
Marine, defence and seasonal trades across the Solent and the Isle of Wight raise occupational questions that insurers treat differently. Presentation matters, and a local understanding of how these businesses actually operate helps.
