Life Insurance
Joint versus single-life cover
How two single policies compare with one joint policy for a couple.
A joint policy usually pays once, on the first death, and then ends. Two single policies each pay on their own terms, which can leave the surviving partner still insured.
Joint cover is often slightly cheaper; separate policies usually offer more flexibility, particularly if circumstances or relationships change.
Things worth considering
- A joint first-death policy leaves the survivor without cover once it pays
- Separate policies can be placed in trust independently of one another
- Cost differences are often smaller than people expect
